Netflix Data Portal
NETFLIX
Netflix Data Portal is an internal application used by over 4000 employees to find, produce, schedule, and query data. The application aims to unify complex platform services into optimized and connected user flows. The design heavily prioritizes user productivity, trust and reliability, innovation, and personalization (in both the interface and contents). Many users depend on this software as a critical function of their work, spending as much time if not more using this tool than external enterprise apps like GSuite, Slack, and Tableau. The application includes key features such as Global Search, Data Discovery and Navigation, Workflow Monitoring, and a full featured SQL Query Editor. In my role, I lead the design and engineering team for the application, drive innovation from concept through delivery, and influence the priorities of platform service partners. I push engineers to embrace their role in user experience and I jump into detailed design, user research, and a little bit of front-end work whenever I can.
SQL QUERY EDITOR
The query editor is the most heavily used portion of the Data Portal application. It is an Integrated Development Enviornment and contains complex interactions like schema browsing, multi-tasking, collaboration, and realtime input validation. The interface requires thoughtful UX that is reliable and gives users control while optimizing high-volume tasks.
Global Search
In the Data Portal, users can leverage deep filtering to search across the entire platform. This application contains more than 4 million entities, making it important to slice the catalog by precisely what a user is looking for. Additionally, search capabilities are the key foundations in enabling most experiences in the application (ex: show me the things that I own). Search provides the connections and glue that unifies the underlying platform infrastructure and masks complexity for users.
